Basque Country’s Industrial Zones Turn into Gardens
Bilbao, once known for its heavy industry, has become one of Spain’s leaders in the development of urban farming in 2026. Extensive urban gardens now stretch across rooftops, former factory areas, and abandoned lots. Bilbao residents are actively involved in growing their own organic produce, which is radically changing the city’s appearance and culture.
The ‘Bilbao Green Belt’ project has brought together over a hundred local cooperatives. Citizens not only provide themselves with fresh fruits and vegetables but also supply the surplus to local restaurants and farmers’ markets. Schools have included the basics of agroecology in their curriculum, teaching children the importance of caring for nature and eating healthy.
“Urban farming has given us more than just food. It has given us a sense of community and connection to the land,” notes the head of a cooperative. Bilbao’s transformation demonstrates how industrial cities can successfully adapt to the challenges of the 21st century by focusing on sustainable development and eco-friendly lifestyles.
